Jom Makan

Jom Makan specializes in Singaporean snacks like Egg-Sponge Cake (Kuih Bahulu), Baked Pandan Cake (Kuih Bakar Pandan), Chocolate Bread, Honeycomb Cookies (Kuih Ros), and Curry Puffs (Epok-epok). The goal is to bring a taste of Singapore to New Zealand, pass down traditional flavors to their children, and share their culture with the local community.

Nor grew up in Singapore and previously worked as a police officer, which left little time for cooking or baking. 11 years ago, Nor and her husband, Rizal, moved to New Zealand with their three children, where they missed the flavors of home. To cope, Nor began learning to cook traditional Singaporean snacks, often calling their mom for recipes. As their family enjoyed the treats, Nor started sharing them with neighbors, and one neighbor encouraged them to start selling.

Unsure of how to start a business, the Nor sought advice from a neighbor, who recommended The Kitchen Project. They applied, and the experience has been transformative, providing valuable classes and 1-on-1 mentoring, which helped them shape their business.

In five years, Nor hopes to expand their presence at more markets, growing their business and increasing awareness of their snacks. The vision is to continue sharing their culture through food and to keep introducing new snacks for people to enjoy.
