Joanna grew up in Auckland with a musical and artistic family. This might explain where her childhood passion for decorating, and later cooking, came from. Her first job was as a deli manager and caterer in the central city. Having then studied floristry and interior decorating, she’s been self-employed for 25 years. But her real passion lies in working with disenfranchised youth.

The idea for Car Pie Kitchen emerged from discussions about how hard it is to find healthy savoury items for under $10. Specialising in mainly wheat-free and vegetarian savoury pastries and muffins meant that both affordability and dietary needs could be met at once. The mentoring and community input from The Kitchen Project helped develop this idea into a scalable business.

Joanna’s goal is to create wholesome and healthy food, available in the local area of Titirangi and Glen Eden initially, with catering orders developing from that—though Oratia markets and Glen Eden's Organic Outwest have been instrumental in getting started and collecting customer feedback.
